The Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association
Submitted by Rick Brown, KØSU
PPRAA VP 2000 -- 2001

(Reprinted from the www.ARRL.net website: https://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/club/sscspot/2001/0207/index.html)

The Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association traces its beginnings prior to WW II when it was organized as the Pikes Peak Amateur Radio Association and used the call of W9OKY. At that time Colorado was located in the 9th district. During WW II the club was disbanded and was reformed in November of 1950 as the El Paso Radio Club. In 1959, the name of the club was changed to the Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association and in 1969 it was issued the call WAØVTU which it proudly uses today.

The PPRAA continues supporting activities that were started by the original club such as communications for the Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb and Field Day. Today, many new amateur related activities have been added, including providing public service communications for events such as the Pikes Peak Marathon, the Colorado Springs Balloon Classic, Skywarn severe weather nets, and an annual Swapfest that is one of the largest in Colorado.

The Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association also supports Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) locally, and many members provide radio communications to the National Weather Service via antennas installed by the PPRAA on all Colorado Springs hospitals. For several years the club has provided stations and ham radio demonstrations for the Scout Jamboree-on-the-Air, and Boy Scout Freezoree events held annually at the United States Air Force Academy

The PPRAA sponsors amateur radio classes taught by ARRL Instructor of the Year (1997), Frank McNally, KFØWF. Additionally, a variety of educational programs are presented at monthly club meetings and ARRL VE test sessions are held several times a year in the Colorado Springs area.

Social activities of the club include an annual picnic, hidden transmitter hunts, and an annual Christmas Party. Members also gather each Saturday morning for an informal breakfast.

Over the years, the Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association has received local, state, and national awards for services to the community such as the American Radio Relay League public service award in November 1977. The Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association was affiliated with the ARRL as early as 1951, and has been a Special Service Club for many years. The club is also a charter member of the Colorado Council of Amateur Radio Clubs.

Club members holding ARRL positions include Jeff Ryan, N0WPA, Assistant Section Manager, Mike Stansberry, KØTER, Section Traffic Manager, and Ron Deutsch, NKØP, Affiliated Club Coordinator. Jerry VerDuft, AD0A is an ARRL NTS Regional Net Manager and Rick Brown, KØSU and Ron Deutsch, NKØP are ARRL HF and VHF/UHF awards managers.

The Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association continues to produce the award-winning monthly newsletter, Ø-Beat that was started in the 50's and provides the Pikes Peak region with a focal point for amateur radio interests. The club maintains a web site www.qsl.net/ppraa and an e--mail reflector to promote club activities. For the past year we produced the newsletter in electronic format (PDF) for members wishing to receive their newsletter via e-mail.

The Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association meets on the second Wednesday of the month. Also, the club sponsors a two-meter simplex net on 146.58 MHz each Thursday evening to disseminate club information and to encourage amateurs to improve their communications capabilities.

Contact PPRAA through ppraa@ppraa.org or visit its website at www.ppraa.org and join the fun! You will also get full access to the rest of the PPRAA Forums!
